The LOXXESS Group is an owner-managed family company and European contract logistics provider. With 24 locations in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland, the company employs over 3,500 people, has more than 300,000 m² of warehouse space, and generates more than 300 million euros in turnover (2024).

The Challenge: Competitive logistics amidst rising energy costs

As a contract logistics provider with a focus on temperature-controlled logistics and customized IT solutions, LOXXESS faced complex requirements:

  • Competitive pressure due to energy costs: In logistics, just a few cents per package often decide contracts. Rising energy prices threaten competitiveness against competitors in cheaper markets.

  • Temperature-controlled logistics requires predictability: From pharmaceuticals to food, cold chains run 24/7 and need reliable energy prices for calculable offerings to customers.

  • Sustainability reporting becomes mandatory: Large logistics clients demand detailed CO₂ balance sheets. Without green energy, it will be difficult to win tenders.

"The electricity market is complex; we don't have a purchasing team that could put together a tariff for us that combines cheap and green energy."

Hermann Zwingel, Sustainability Manager at LOXXESS

The Strategy: From standard tariff to intelligent energy portfolio

The collaboration with trawa began in summer 2023. For LOXXESS, the concept was initially new: "Until then, our understanding was that PPA models were only for major consumers," explains Hermann Zwingel. On January 1, 2024, intelligent energy procurement started with a portfolio that functions like an investment fund:

The trawa portfolio for LOXXESS combines three components:

This strategy enables professional energy procurement for medium-sized businesses - without an in-house purchasing team or market expertise. Year after year, the portfolio is individually adjusted to the consumption profile in order to meet the specific needs of customers while ensuring maximum flexibility.

The Success: When sustainability works without extra costs

€0 investment costs for professional energy procurement

With 5.3 GWh of annual consumption, LOXXESS was able to enter professional energy procurement without additional investments, achieving operational relief without its own purchasing team or market know-how. trawa simplifies the complexity of energy purchasing and management.

1,498 tons of CO₂ savings through 100% certified green electricity

This corresponds to the emissions of approx. 200 two-person households. Particularly important for LOXXESS: 72% of the electricity comes from direct PPAs with German wind and solar parks, thereby supporting the "NEXXT" sustainability strategy with the goal "Cool. Green. And Fit for Grandchildren." by 2028.

Planning reliability through a diversified energy portfolio

The intelligent combination of fixed-price long-term PPAs and dynamic tariffs takes advantage of favorable spot market phases while offering protection against price shocks.

"We practice environmental protection out of fundamental conviction. Sourcing electricity from solar and wind parks in Germany is a wonderful addition. It is important to us to increase our climate protection efforts as locally as possible."

Dr. Albert Hans Baur,
Senior Sustainability Manager LOXXESS

More than energy: How trawa supports the 2028 logistics strategy

Despite high energy prices, the partnership with trawa enables LOXXESS to control costs and use sustainability as an advantage - thus making an important contribution to the corporate strategy "NEXXT" with the target vision "Cool. Green. And fit for grandchildren." by 2028.

  • Competitiveness through stable energy costs: Stable energy costs allow for reliable offers to customers, even in volatile markets, thus strengthening competitiveness against competitors in cheaper European markets.

  • Sustainability reporting as a bidding advantage: Detailed CO₂ balances and green electricity certificates strengthen the position in customer tenders.

  • Strategic partnership for future solutions: trawa understands the specific logistics requirements and develops customized solutions for additional energy sources and markets together with LOXXESS. In addition, trawa identified further potential in the 6-figure range for future efficiency improvements.

"With trawa, we have the ideal partner by our side. As a logistics company, we have high demands for efficiency, innovation, and customized solutions, and that is how we now purchase electricity as well."

Hermann Zwingel, Sustainability Manager at LOXXESS
